Part 2 – CLARA HAD SEEN IT COMING

Gabriel carried the folder into the garage and locked the door behind him.

He didn’t want Lucas to see any of it.

Not until he understood the truth himself.

The files were arranged with disturbing precision.

Every folder contained the same sequence.

A photograph.

Property records.

Insurance information.

Family trees.

And handwritten notes in Candice’s unmistakable handwriting.

“Recently widowed.”

“Emotionally vulnerable.”

“Owns home outright.”

“No close relatives nearby.”

Gabriel’s pulse quickened.

He turned to the final section.

There, clipped together with a faded paperclip, was his own name.

Gabriel Lawson.

His address.

His trucking routes.

His income.

The date Clara had died.

The date Candice had first “accidentally” met him at a church fundraiser.

His knees nearly gave out.

He wasn’t reading someone else’s file.

He was reading his own.

Every step of their relationship had been planned.

He hurried back upstairs and searched the bedroom more carefully.

Inside the jewelry box was a tiny key.

It matched the old fireproof lockbox Clara had insisted on keeping in the garage years earlier.

Gabriel had almost thrown it away after her funeral.

Now he unlocked it.

Inside lay a sealed envelope in Clara’s handwriting.

“For Gabriel and Lucas. Only if something ever feels terribly wrong.”

His hands trembled as he unfolded the letter.

Clara wrote that she had become suspicious during the final months of her illness.

She believed someone was asking unusual questions about their finances, insurance policies, and Lucas’s inheritance.

She never named Candice.

Instead, she wrote one sentence that froze Gabriel where he stood.

“If Lucas is ever treated like he doesn’t belong in his own home, don’t assume it’s cruelty. Assume someone wants him to disappear from it.”

A second envelope contained copies of the house deed.

Gabriel stared at the signature page.

The document currently registered with the county listed both his and Candice’s names.

Clara’s copy was different.

According to the original trust, the house could never legally be transferred while Lucas was still a minor.

Someone had altered the ownership records after Clara’s death.

Gabriel immediately began photographing every page.

Then he quietly installed three small security cameras overlooking the living room, kitchen, and master bedroom.

He wasn’t preparing for an argument.

He was preparing for evidence.

Just then, his phone buzzed.

The airline notification confirmed Candice’s flight from Miami had landed two hours early.

She wasn’t coming home Sunday.

She was driving toward the house right now.

And according to the GPS shared through the family account…

She wasn’t alone.
