Parte 2: THE EVICTION NOTICE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

No one moved.

The massive glass doors locked with a loud metallic click.

The two security guards stopped where they were, exchanging confused looks.

I tightened my grip on the wallet.

My heart pounded so hard I thought everyone could hear it.

“I… I only wanted to return it,” I whispered.

Mr. Graves looked at me, but his eyes kept drifting back to the pink eviction notice sticking out of my backpack.

“What’s your name?” he asked quietly.

“Ruby.”

“And your mother’s name?”

I hesitated.

“Claire Thompson.”

The moment I said it, he staggered backward.

It looked as though someone had punched him in the chest.

“Impossible…”

His assistant rushed to his side.

“Sir?”

Nathaniel didn’t answer.

He slowly knelt until we were at eye level.

“Ruby… how old are you?”

“I’m eight.”

His hands began trembling.

“When is your birthday?”

I told him.

Every bit of color drained from his face.

He whispered something so softly I barely heard it.

“Twelve years…”

The receptionist looked completely confused.

“Mr. Graves, should I call the police?”

He snapped his head toward her.

“No.”

His voice was sharper than anyone expected.

“No one calls anyone.”

He gently took the wallet from my hands.

Without even checking the money, he slipped it into his pocket.

Then he pointed toward the folded pink paper.

“May I see your eviction notice?”

I nodded.

He unfolded it carefully.

The address printed across the top made him freeze.

Apartment 3B.

Maple Court.

He stared at it for several long seconds.

“I know this address.”

My stomach tightened.

“That’s where my mom and I live.”

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

“I bought that building twelve years ago.”

Now everyone in the lobby was listening.

His attorney stepped forward.

“Sir… twelve years ago wasn’t that—”

Nathaniel raised one hand.

“Don’t.”

He looked back at me.

“Ruby… does your mother have a photograph with a man wearing a navy military jacket?”

I blinked.

“Yes.”

His breathing became uneven.

“He smiles a lot.”

I nodded again.

“My mom keeps it in a wooden box.”

The attorney looked stunned.

Nathaniel whispered,

“My God…”

He immediately turned to his assistant.

“Find Claire Thompson.”

“Right now.”

The assistant was already typing.

Less than a minute later, she looked up.

“Sir…”

Her voice shook.

“Claire Thompson worked for Graves Energy twelve years ago.”

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

“I know.”

The assistant continued reading.

“She resigned suddenly after the refinery explosion.”

The entire lobby became silent.

Even I knew about that accident.

It had been on television every year.

Twenty-three workers had died.

Nathaniel slowly looked at me again.

“What did your mother tell you about your father?”

I lowered my eyes.

“She said he was brave.”

I smiled a little.

“And that he died helping other people.”

Nathaniel’s hands trembled harder.

He whispered,

“So did mine.”

Before I could ask what he meant, another employee ran into the lobby carrying an old archive box.

“Sir!”

“I found the personnel records.”

Nathaniel opened the dusty folder.

A photograph slipped onto the marble floor.

He picked it up.

The woman smiling beside a young engineer was my mother.

The man standing beside her…

Looked exactly like me.

Nathaniel stared at the picture for a long moment before speaking.

“His name was Daniel Carter.”

I nodded.

“That’s my dad.”

Nathaniel swallowed hard.

“He wasn’t just one of my engineers.”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“He was my best friend.”

Tears filled his eyes.

“I promised him that if anything ever happened, I would take care of his family.”

He clenched the photograph.

“But someone told me Claire disappeared after taking company compensation and leaving the state.”

The attorney’s expression suddenly changed.

“Sir…”

He quickly flipped through another file.

“There was no compensation payment.”

Nathaniel frowned.

“What?”

“The insurance money was approved…”

The attorney stopped reading.

Then looked up in disbelief.

“It was redirected.”

Nathaniel’s voice became dangerously calm.

“Redirected to whom?”

The attorney slowly turned the last page.

His face went completely pale.

It was transferred twelve years ago into a trust controlled by… your younger brother, William Graves.
