Parte 2: THE BACKUP FILE

My hands wouldn’t stop shaking.

Victor’s face filled the screen as he entered my bedroom.

He looked straight into the security camera.

Then he smiled.

Not because he didn’t know it was recording.

Because he believed the footage would never exist.

He unlocked my safe using the emergency override code that only three people knew.

Me.

Victor.

And Claire.

He removed Claire’s ruby pendant.

Closed the safe.

Walked calmly toward the nursery.

The timestamp froze my blood.

It was two nights before Emma had supposedly “kidnapped” my daughters.

I fast-forwarded.

Victor entered the nursery carrying a small syringe.

He looked around carefully before opening Sophie’s crib.

The video suddenly glitched.

The screen went black.

When the picture returned thirty-eight seconds later, Victor was gone.

I immediately called Dr. Reynolds, our longtime family physician.

“Come to the ranch,” I said.

“Now.”

Emma sat quietly inside the service office with her wrists cuffed in front of her.

She hadn’t asked for a lawyer.

Hadn’t cried.

Hadn’t defended herself.

She only asked one question when I walked in.

“Did Sophie see a doctor?”

I stared at her.

“You’re worried about her after everything that’s happened?”

Emma looked confused.

“She’s six months old.”

“As long as she’s breathing, nothing else matters.”

Those weren’t the words of someone protecting herself.

Those were the words of someone protecting my children.

I unlocked the handcuffs.

The deputy beside me frowned.

“Mr. Whitmore…”

“Take them off.”

Emma rubbed her wrists but said nothing.

I placed my phone on the table.

Pressed play.

Victor appeared on the screen.

Emma watched silently until the video ended.

Then she whispered,

“I knew he’d been doing something.”

Dr. Reynolds arrived twenty minutes later.

He examined Sophie first.

Then Lily.

Then Grace.

His expression darkened.

“These girls have traces of a powerful sedative.”

I felt the room spin.

“What?”

“It wasn’t enough to kill them.”

“But repeated doses…”

He didn’t finish the sentence.

He didn’t have to.

We searched Victor’s office.

Inside a locked cabinet the sheriff discovered forged maintenance reports, deleted payroll files, and a stack of insurance documents.

My name appeared repeatedly.

So did my daughters’.

Life insurance.

Trust agreements.

Inheritance schedules.

If all three girls died before their first birthday…

Every controlling share of Whitmore Ranch transferred automatically to the acting trustee.

Victor Hale.

I stared at the papers in disbelief.

“My God…”

The sheriff looked at me grimly.

“He wasn’t trying to kidnap your children.”

“He was trying to inherit them.”

Just then, one of the deputies rushed inside carrying another folder.

“Sir…”

“You need to see this.”

Inside was a sealed envelope addressed to me.

The handwriting stopped my heart.

Claire’s.

My late wife’s unmistakable handwriting.

The letter had been hidden inside the ranch’s legal archives.

Apparently never delivered.

I unfolded it with trembling fingers.

Daniel,

If you’re reading this, someone prevented this letter from reaching you.

I don’t trust Victor anymore.

I caught him searching through our financial records after everyone went to bed.

If anything happens to me during childbirth…

Please don’t let him raise our daughters.

My vision blurred.

There was one final paragraph.

One sentence.

The sentence that shattered everything I believed about the last seven years.

There’s something I never told you.

Victor wasn’t working for our family…

He was working for the people who wanted the Whitmore fortune long before I ever met you.

Outside, police sirens echoed across the snow-covered ranch.

Victor’s empty office chair slowly spun in place.

He was gone.

And somewhere beyond the frozen fields…

The man I had trusted more than my own brother had just realized I knew the truth.
